One of the most rewarding aspects of covering the entertainment industry is being introduced to stories, cultures, and perspectives that you might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience. Saudi Film Nights at the Lesedi Theatre at the Joburg Theatre offered exactly that, bringing Saudi Arabian cinema to Johannesburg in an event that celebrated film, creativity, and cultural exchange. The initiative was brought to us by the Joburg Film Festival, creating an opportunity for local media and guests to experience the work of Saudi filmmakers and talent while gaining insight into a different film industry.
Setting the Scene: A Press Briefing with the Stars
The evening kicked off with a press briefing in the Brickhill Room at the Joburg Theatre, where we were welcomed by the wonderful Didintle Khunou, who proved to be the perfect host for the occasion. We had the opportunity to hear from the Joburg Film Festival manager Taryn Joffe and Saudi actress Rand AlGosaibi, who shared their perspectives on the event and the importance of creating opportunities for audiences to engage with cinema from different parts of the world. It was a great way to set the tone for the evening, offering insight into the initiative before we headed off to experience the films themselves.
Red Carpet Moments and One-on-One Interviews
From the press briefing, we made our way to the red carpet at the Lesedi Theatre, where the atmosphere was filled with excitement and anticipation ahead of the screenings. As always, one of my favourite parts of attending these events is getting the opportunity to connect with the people behind the productions and hear their stories firsthand. I was fortunate enough to have one-on-one interviews with Taryn Joffe, Rand AlGosaibi and actor Mohammed AlDokhei (in the picture). These conversations provided an opportunity to learn more about the people involved in the event and the creative talent helping bring Saudi cinema to a wider audience. There was also time to mingle with fellow guests and members of the media before heading into the theatre for the main attraction.
Discovering Saudi Cinema on the Big Screen
The highlight of the evening was, of course, the opportunity to experience the films. We were treated to a screening of the short film Irtizaz, followed by the feature-length movie Night Courier. It was a chance to immerse ourselves in Saudi storytelling and experience cinematic works that offered a different cultural perspective. Film has a wonderful way of connecting people, allowing us to explore different worlds, understand new perspectives and discover the similarities that unite us, even when our backgrounds and experiences differ. For me, this was what made Saudi Film Nights particularly special. It exposed me to content from a different culture that I might not otherwise have had the opportunity to access. As someone who loves exploring the entertainment industry and meeting creatives from across the globe, opportunities like these are always welcome. Following the screenings, Didintle Khunou returned to the stage to conduct a Q&A session with the artists, giving the audience an opportunity to hear more from the talent and gain further insight into the films. It was a fitting way to round off the cinematic experience, bringing the evening’s conversations and storytelling together.
A Memorable Evening of Cultural Exchange
Saudi Film Nights was a reminder of how important initiatives like these are in creating connections between different film industries and introducing audiences to stories beyond their usual viewing experiences. Events such as this give us access to international talent, encourage conversations across cultures, and remind us that storytelling is a universal language. Whether through a short film or a feature-length production, cinema can transport us into someone else’s world. And, of course, we were treated to a great goodie bag, which was a lovely finishing touch to an already enjoyable evening! A huge shout-out to Melanie Ramjee and the team at Tutone Communications for putting together such a great event and making us feel welcome throughout the experience. Thank you to the Joburg Film Festival for bringing Saudi Film Nights to the Joburg Theatre and creating a platform for us to discover and celebrate Saudi cinema. Another wonderful opportunity to meet talented people, expand my cinematic horizons and celebrate the power of entertainment to bring the world a little closer together.
