There are comedy shows, and then there are events that become institutions. Kings & Queens of Comedy has firmly established itself as one of South Africa’s premier comedy showcases, bringing together the country’s finest comedians under one roof for an unforgettable evening of laughter. Now in its 14th edition, the event once again proved why audiences continue to flock to experience the magic live.
On 18 July, Centre Court at Emperors Palace was transformed into South Africa’s biggest comedy club as a sold-out audience of approximately 4,000 people filled every seat, eager for an evening of world-class entertainment. From the moment guests arrived until the final standing ovation, the energy inside the venue was electric.
A huge thank you goes to Blu Blood Entertainment, Shaaista Khan Osman, and Monica Steyn for putting together yet another exceptional production. Events of this scale require months of planning, and every detail reflected the professionalism and passion of the team behind the scenes.
One of the evening’s biggest strengths was the seamless pacing, expertly handled by host Darren Maule. Darren’s quick wit, effortless audience interaction, and infectious humour kept the momentum going between performances, ensuring there wasn’t a single dull moment throughout the night.
Adding a unique musical dimension to the evening was internationally acclaimed violinist Caitlin De Ville, whose captivating performances opened both the first and second halves of the show. Her electrifying stage presence and exceptional musicianship provided the perfect complement to the comedy, creating a spectacular atmosphere before the comedians took to the stage.
For me, one of the greatest privileges of the evening was having the opportunity to interview every performer and several of the key people responsible for making the event happen. Throughout the night, I sat down with:

Each conversation offered fascinating insight into the performers’ careers, creative processes, and what it means to be part of one of South Africa’s most celebrated comedy events. It was wonderful hearing their individual stories while also discovering the mutual respect they have for one another.
What made this event particularly special wasn’t just what happened on stage—it was everything happening behind the curtain.
I spent roughly 70% of my evening in the green room, and it quickly became apparent why this event has enjoyed such longevity. Rather than feeling like a collection of individual performers arriving to do a job, the atmosphere resembled a family reunion. Comedians laughed together, encouraged one another before heading on stage, celebrated each other’s performances, and welcomed everyone into the conversation. There was no sense of ego—just genuine camaraderie and mutual admiration.
That feeling of family undoubtedly filters through to the audience. When performers genuinely enjoy working together, it creates an authenticity that cannot be manufactured, and it was evident throughout the evening.
Kings & Queens of Comedy has become much more than a comedy show. It has evolved into a celebration of South African comedy, showcasing established legends alongside incredible contemporary talent while reminding audiences of the power of laughter to bring people together.
