Every great voice has a story to tell, and the 2nd Annual South African Voiceover Awards provided the perfect platform to celebrate the talented individuals who use their voices to inform, entertain, and inspire us. The 2nd Annual South African Voiceover Awards did exactly that, bringing together some of the country’s exceptional voice artists and industry professionals for an evening dedicated to recognising the power of the spoken word. My journey with the awards began at the start of August, when I attended the nominee announcement lunch at Venue on Leslie in Fourways. It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with familiar faces, network with fellow media professionals and get a glimpse into the excitement building around this year’s awards. During the lunch, I had the opportunity to interview nine media personalities, including Amanda Du-Pont and Bolele Polisa, as well as the creator of the awards, Sinemivuyo Mpulu. Speaking to Sinemivuyo was particularly special, as he shared the inspiration behind establishing the awards and the importance of creating a platform that recognises and celebrates the incredible talent within South Africa’s voiceover industry. One of the exciting announcements was the introduction of sign language as a new awards category. This is an important and meaningful development, broadening the scope of the awards and recognising the vital role that sign language professionals play in communication, accessibility, and inclusion. It was wonderful to see the awards evolve to embrace an even wider range of talent and skills.
What Are the South African Voiceover Awards?
Voiceover artists are an essential part of the entertainment, advertising, and communications industries. Their voices bring advertisements to life, narrate documentaries, guide audiences through television and radio content, give animated characters their personalities and help tell stories across a variety of platforms. Yet, despite the important role they play, voice artists often work behind the scenes, with their voices being instantly recognisable while their faces remain unfamiliar to the public. The South African Voiceover Awards were created to address this by providing a dedicated platform to recognise, celebrate and honour the talented individuals who use their voices to inform, entertain, inspire, and connect with audiences. The awards shine a spotlight on the professionalism, versatility and creativity required to succeed in this specialised industry, while helping to build greater awareness of the voiceover profession. Initiatives like these are important because they bring the industry together, celebrate excellence and create opportunities for professionals to connect, collaborate, and grow.
10 October: The Red Carpet Comes Alive at The Indaba
Fast-forward to 10 October, and it was finally time for the main event at The Indaba. As always, there is an unmistakable buzz that comes with covering a red carpet. From the excitement of the arrivals to the conversations taking place between interviews, these events offer a wonderful opportunity to connect with the people who make the entertainment industry so vibrant. For me, red-carpet coverage is about much more than simply asking questions and capturing a few sound bites. It is about creating connections, hearing people’s stories, celebrating their achievements and giving audiences an opportunity to get to know the personalities behind their work. We spent the event covering the red carpet and, in true Celeb Savant fashion, remained on the carpet to interview the winners as they celebrated their achievements. There is something particularly rewarding about speaking to someone moments after their name has been announced as a winner. The excitement, emotion and pride are still fresh, making for some memorable conversations.
Throughout the evening, we interviewed an impressive 32 artists and industry personalities, capturing their experiences, celebrating their accomplishments, and finding out more about their journeys in the world of voiceover and entertainment. Among those we had the pleasure of interviewing were Zanda Zakuza, Darren Maule, Fiona Ramsay, Angela Linda, Bianca Amato, Dudu Khoza and Dr Gcina Mhlophe, alongside many other talented individuals who contributed to making the evening such a memorable celebration. Each conversation offered a different perspective on the industry, highlighting the diverse talent, experience and passion that exist within South Africa’s creative community. From established names to talented professionals whose work deserves greater recognition, it was a privilege to give these voices a platform.
Celebrating the People Behind the Voices
What stood out for me throughout the experience was the importance of bringing the voiceover community together under one roof. The industry is filled with talented individuals who work across different genres, platforms, and disciplines, yet share a common passion for using their voices to communicate and tell stories. The awards provided an opportunity for these professionals to celebrate one another, acknowledge the hard work that goes into their craft and enjoy a well-deserved moment in the spotlight. The addition of sign language to the awards categories was another highlight, reinforcing the importance of recognising different forms of communication and making the industry more inclusive. It is encouraging to see an initiative grow while continuing to find new ways to recognise the people who make communication accessible and impactful. As someone who enjoys connecting with artists and industry professionals, I always appreciate events that go beyond the ceremony itself. The networking, conversations and shared excitement are just as important as the awards, helping strengthen the relationships that make our entertainment industry so special.
A Shoutout to Sinemivuyo Mpulu
A special shoutout goes to Sinemivuyo Mpulu for recognising a need within the industry and turning that vision into an exceptional event. Creating an awards platform from the ground up takes passion, determination, and a genuine belief in the people you want to celebrate. Bringing the South African Voiceover Awards to life gives voice artists the recognition they deserve while helping raise the profile of an industry that plays such an important role in our everyday lives. It was wonderful to meet Sinemivuyo at the nominee announcement lunch in August, hear the story behind the awards and then see that vision come to life at the October event. The growth of the awards, including the introduction of sign language as a category, demonstrates the potential for this initiative to continue evolving and making a meaningful contribution to the industry. Congratulations to Sinemivuyo, the organising team, all the nominees and every winner who took home an award. Here is to continued growth, greater recognition and many more years of celebrating South Africa’s incredible voice talent!
Another Memorable Red-Carpet Experience
Covering the 2nd Annual South African Voiceover Awards was another wonderful addition to the Celeb Savant journey. From the nominee announcement lunch and nine interviews in August to the excitement of the main event, 32 interviews and the celebration of the winners in October, it was an experience filled with great conversations, networking, and industry appreciation. A huge thank you to Sinemivuyo Mpulu and the team for creating a platform that celebrates the voices behind so many of the stories we hear every day. At Celeb Savant, we love being part of these moments, shining a light on the people who make the entertainment industry what it is and sharing their stories with our audience. Because sometimes, the voices that deserve to be heard the most are the ones working behind the scenes.
