There are few places where the energy of the entertainment industry can be felt as intensely as on the red carpet of the South African Film and Television Awards. From the moment we arrived at 15:00, the atmosphere was electric — a combination of anticipation, excitement, and pure adrenaline as the country’s finest talent gathered to celebrate excellence in film and television.

Throughout the afternoon and evening, I had the privilege of interviewing an incredible 44 artists, both on the red carpet and later in the media room with the winners. Each conversation offered a glimpse into the passion, dedication, and creativity that drive South Africa’s entertainment industry.

Among the highlights was catching up with the evening’s host, Anele Mdoda, whose charisma and energy perfectly set the tone for the event. On the red carpet, the excitement was palpable as nominees arrived, dressed to impress and ready to celebrate their peers. The red carpet was filled with familiar faces and celebrated personalities, including Zikhona SodlakaPearl Modiadie, and Zanele Potelwa, each bringing their own style and energy to the evening.

Later in the evening, the media room became the hub of celebration as winners shared their reactions and reflections. I had the opportunity to speak with several standout talents, including Bonko Khoza, whose performance continues to captivate audiences, and Desiree Gardner, who walked away with multiple awards on the night — a testament to both talent and hard work.

Another memorable moment was speaking with Litlhonolofatso Litlhakanyane, one of the evening’s winners whose recognition highlights the depth of emerging talent in the industry. The night also honoured a true legend, Bobby Heaney, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award — a powerful reminder of the history and dedication that have helped shape South African television and film.

What stood out most across all 44 interviews was the shared sense of community within the industry. Despite the glamour and the awards, every artist spoke with humility and gratitude — not only for their own achievements but for the growth and global recognition of South African storytelling.

Covering the event from early afternoon into the evening meant riding a wave of adrenaline. The pace is relentless on a red carpet — one interview flows straight into the next, cameras flashing, publicists guiding talent through the line, and moments that last only a few minutes before the next conversation begins. Yet those brief interactions often reveal powerful insights into the people behind the performances.

The South African Film and Television Awards continue to highlight the incredible depth of talent in the country. From seasoned veterans to rising stars, the nominees and winners represent the very best of the industry — storytellers who bring South African narratives to life on screens both locally and internationally.

By the end of the night, after dozens of interviews and countless memorable moments, one thing was clear: the future of South African film and television is incredibly bright.

And if the energy on this year’s red carpet is anything to go by, the next chapter of the industry is going to be even more exciting.
