There are comedy shows, and then there are events that become annual institutions. Mpho Popps & Friends has firmly established itself as one of South Africa’s most anticipated comedy celebrations, and this year marked a remarkable milestone—the 10th annual edition of the show.
Held at the iconic Lyric Theatre, the event once again proved why tickets disappear so quickly every June. Traditionally staged over a Friday and Saturday during Mpho Popps’ birthday month, the show has become his way of celebrating another year around the sun with the people who have supported his incredible journey. Born on 10 June, Mpho has turned his birthday into a gift for comedy lovers across the country.
I had the pleasure of attending the Saturday night performance, and from the moment I arrived, it was clear that this wasn’t just another comedy show—it was a celebration.
The Best-Kept Secret in South African Comedy
One of the elements that makes Mpho Popps & Friends so unique is that the audience never knows exactly who will appear on stage.
That mystery creates an electric atmosphere. Every entrance is met with anticipation, cheers, and excitement as another comedy heavyweight walks into the spotlight. The surprises keep coming throughout the evening, making every edition feel fresh and exclusive.
This year’s lineup delivered in every possible way.
Behind the Curtain
One of the highlights of covering the event was spending time backstage, where the excitement was just as infectious as it was inside the theatre. I had the privilege of interviewing an incredible lineup of performers, including Mpho Popps himself, Summary, David Kau, Somizi Mhlongo, Loyiso Gola, Thabiso Mhlongo, Basketmouth and Chris Mapane. Robby Collins and Kwaito legend Mdu Masilela were also on the lineup and entertained the crowd Each conversation offered a glimpse into the personalities behind the performances and highlighted the respect and admiration these entertainers have for Mpho and what he has built over the past decade.
A Gathering of Industry Legends
The backstage area felt like an entertainment industry reunion. It wasn’t only the performers who were celebrating. Some of South Africa’s most respected entertainment figures were there to support the occasion. I also had the opportunity to interview industry veterans Mo Mothebe, Eric Jansen and Farieda Metsileng, making the evening an incredible networking and storytelling experience. It was inspiring to see so many influential figures coming together to celebrate not only Mpho’s birthday but also his contribution to South African comedy.
Eight Looks, One Star
If there was any doubt that Mpho Popps knows how to command a stage, his wardrobe certainly removed it. Throughout the evening, he appeared in eight different outfits, each perfectly styled and suited to the occasion. Every entrance felt like a new chapter of the show, adding another layer of excitement to an already spectacular production. He looked fantastic from beginning to end, proving that presentation matters just as much as performance.
Three Hours of Non-Stop Entertainment
Running for approximately three hours, the production never lost momentum. The pacing was excellent, the transitions seamless, and every comedian brought their own unique flavour to the stage. Whether it was observational humour, storytelling, crowd interaction or razor-sharp punchlines, there was something for everyone. Most importantly, the audience laughed continuously from start to finish. In an era where live entertainment competes with endless streaming options, Mpho Popps & Friends reminds us why nothing compares to experiencing live comedy inside a packed theatre.

Reaching a tenth anniversary is no small achievement. It speaks volumes about consistency, hard work, and the ability to continually evolve while maintaining quality. Mpho Popps and his entire production team deserve enormous credit for creating an event that has become one of the highlights of Johannesburg’s entertainment calendar. From the production values and outstanding lineup to the backstage hospitality and flawless execution, everything reflected professionalism and passion.
