There’s a particular kind of electricity that only exists on a red—or in this case, black and yellow—carpet. It’s a blend of anticipation, nerves, laughter, and the hum of a thousand moving parts working in sync. Covering the 2026 Savanna Comics Choice Comedy Awards carpet wasn’t just another media assignment—it was stepping into a living, breathing ecosystem of South African comedy at its absolute best.

From the moment the carpet opened, the energy was undeniable. Publicists, photographers, content creators, and comedians all moved in a carefully choreographed rhythm. And at the heart of that seamless flow was a world-class team ensuring everything ran like clockwork. A huge nod to the powerhouse collaboration between OnPoint PR and One-Eyed Jack. Their coordination on the carpet was exceptional. They didn’t just manage the flow—they elevated it, guiding talent effortlessly between media touchpoints and ensuring that every interview opportunity landed exactly where it needed to.

And for those of us on the media side, that kind of precision is everything. It allows you to focus on what matters most: the conversations.

Across the evening, I had the opportunity to interview 36 artists—each bringing their own flavour, humour, and perspective. From the moment Celeste Ntuli stepped onto the carpet, who won the Headliner Comedian of the Year Award, there was a sense of celebration not just for her, but for the industry as a whole. David Kau, honoured with the Legacy Award, carried the weight and pride of years spent shaping the comedy landscape.

Double winner Dillan Oliphant—taking home Comedian of the Year and Best Solo Show—was a standout, embodying both sharp wit and well-earned recognition. Rising star Rae du Plooy brought fresh energy as Newcomer winner, while Yaaseen Barnes, awarded Best Friend of Comedy, delivered his signature mix of intellect and humour. And then there was Linde Sibanda, whose Breakthrough Act win signals an exciting future ahead.

But the carpet is only half the story.

Inside, the show carried that same vibrant energy, anchored by the brilliantly dynamic hosting of The Goliaths—Kate, Jason, Donovan, and Nicholas—who turned the evening into a true family affair. Their chemistry set the tone for a night that balanced celebration with pure comedic brilliance.

One of the most exciting elements of the awards was giving winners the stage—literally. Each had five minutes to showcase their craft, reminding everyone in the room why they were being honoured. Add to that standout performances from the likes of Summary, Conrad Koch, and the ever-iconic Chester Missing, and you had a lineup that kept the laughter rolling from start to finish.

Covering a carpet like this is more than just interviews and soundbites. It’s about capturing moments in motion—the quick laughs between takes, the genuine reactions, the sense of community that defines South African comedy. It’s fast-paced, unpredictable, and completely addictive.

And when it’s executed at this level—from the organisers to the talent—it becomes something truly special.
